Managing Your Dog’s Allergies

Although many dog owners worry about allergies, most of them are concerned with the humans’ reactions to the dogs. But have you ever wondered if your dog can have allergies too? There are many things that can provoke an allergic reaction in your pet. Here are a few things you need to know about allergies in dogs.

The Basics of Canine Allergies

While allergies can occur in any breed of dog, they have more commonly been seen in Retrievers, Terriers, and Bulldogs. Dogs can be allergic to a variety of different substances, including plants, household items, and even certain foods. Common allergens include:

  • Pollen
  • Feathers and dander
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Food ingredients (like chicken, pork, beef, corn, wheat, or preservatives)
  • Fleas
  • Medications
  • Cleaning products
  • Some types of plastic and rubber

Symptoms

A dog’s allergy can have many symptoms, including runny eyes, sneezing, and even vomiting and diarrhea. Your dog may show signs of severe itchiness, including increased scratching, licking, and rubbing, as well as skin problems such as inflammation, rashes, or scabs. If you notice any of these symptoms, take your dog to the vet for allergy testing.

Treatments

Your vet will most likely perform a variety of tests on your pet, as well as a full physical examination. If your dog is diagnosed with an allergy, then the best treatment is simply to remove the allergen from their environment. This can be a great way to reduce symptoms, although the amount of work required will vary depending on the allergen. If the problem is a cleaning product or home item, then the best choice is simply to remove the irritant; for pollen or dander you should bathe your pet regularly. Carefully watching your pet’s diet is the best way to manage a food allergy. In addition, your vet may be able to prescribe medications to help manage your pet’s symptoms. Dog allergies can be problematic, but managing them doesn’t have to be difficult.
