Tips for Housetraining Your Dog or Puppy

Many new dog owners can become overwhelmed when it comes to housetraining their pets. Such a process is long and difficult, but it most certainly is not impossible. There are several steps that people can use to successfully housebreak their dogs.

The most important step for new pet owners to take is to establish a routine for their dog. They need to take their pets outside frequently and put them on a regular feeding schedule. Every time dogs use the bathroom, they should be praised and rewarded. By following these tips, pet owners will be one step closer to housebreaking their dogs.

Untrained dogs must be heavily supervised. Leaving them alone gives them the opportunity to soil the house. Owners do not need to monitor their dogs when they are outside, but they should keep a watchful eye when the dogs are roaming around the home.

If people are unable to supervise their pets, then the dogs must be confined to a crate or some other type of small space. The area should be big enough for the dogs to lay down comfortably but small enough to prevent them from wanting to relieve themselves. If owners do not want to use crates, then they can use a baby gate to confine their animals to a bathroom or laundry room.

Owners should expect their dogs to have at least a few accidents before they are house trained. Punishing the animals is not a solution for this particular situation. If they catch their dogs in the act, owners should interrupt and take them outside. Then they should thoroughly disinfect the area where the accident occurred. By supervising their pets, owners can heavily reduce the amount of accidents their pets have.

Housetraining dogs is a lengthy and challenging process, but pet owners should persevere through it. Dogs are wonderfully loyal and loving companions. Once they are housebroken, they will be an immense joy in the lives of their owners.
